Adding a battery to existing solar in Australia
Most Australian homes with solar can add storage without replacing the whole system. This guide explains AC vs DC retrofit paths, what your current inverter means for cost, and how to size a battery for the panels you already have.
Yes - most homes can add a battery later
Adding a battery to an existing solar system is one of the most common upgrade paths in Australia. You already have panels and an inverter exporting daytime energy; storage lets you use more of that power after sunset instead of selling it cheaply to the grid.
Retrofit does not automatically mean ripping out your solar. In many cases an accredited installer adds a battery and the supporting hardware while your current array keeps running. The main design choice is how the battery connects - AC-coupled or DC-coupled - and whether your existing inverter is still fit for purpose.

AC-coupled vs DC-coupled retrofit
AC-coupled batteries sit on the household AC wiring. They charge from excess solar (and the grid if allowed) through your existing solar inverter, which keeps doing its job. The battery has its own inverter or integrated inverter hardware. Tesla Powerwall 3, sonnen and many retrofit-friendly packs commonly use this path.
DC-coupled batteries connect on the DC side between panels and a hybrid inverter. That often means replacing or adding a hybrid inverter that manages both solar and storage. DC coupling can be slightly more efficient because energy does not take an extra AC conversion step, but it is usually more invasive on an existing install.

What your existing inverter means for cost
If your solar inverter is relatively modern, within warranty and compatible with consumption monitoring, an AC-coupled battery add-on is often the cheapest disruption path. You are mainly paying for the battery, mounting, switchboard work and labour - not a full solar replacement.
Older inverters, failed units, or systems without smart metering may push you toward a hybrid inverter upgrade or a full inverter swap. That can add a few thousand dollars to a retrofit quote even before you choose battery capacity. Ask installers to split the quote: battery-only retrofit versus inverter replacement line items.
Microinverter systems (for example Enphase) follow a different wiring model. Storage still works, but the installer designs around per-panel architecture. Do not assume a quote for a neighbour with a string inverter applies directly to your Enphase system.
Typical retrofit costs in 2026
Retrofit installed costs follow the same size bands as new installs on our solar battery cost guide. A common 10 kWh AC-coupled retrofit often quotes roughly $9,000 to $14,000 before rebates, depending on brand, backup scope and switchboard work. A 13.5 kWh integrated unit such as Tesla Powerwall 3 commonly sits toward $12,500 to $17,000 gross.
Retrofit is not always cheaper than buying solar and battery together on a new home. You may save the panel cost, but site work, older switchboards and inverter upgrades can narrow the gap. The economic case usually rests on how much solar you already export at a low feed-in tariff while buying expensive evening power.
After the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount, many retrofits land roughly $5,500 to $12,000 net depending on size and state. Western Australia can stack state rebate on top; New South Wales may offer a VPP connection incentive instead of upfront state cash. Open your state page for local numbers.

Sizing storage for the solar you already have
Retrofit sizing starts with evening use and how much your existing array overproduces during the day. A 6.6 kW system on a medium-use home might export heavily in spring and autumn; a 10 kWh battery can capture a useful share of that surplus. A 3 kW system on the same home may not fill a 13.5 kWh pack reliably in winter.
Check export and import on a recent bill or your solar app. If you routinely export 15 to 20 kWh on sunny days while importing 10 kWh overnight, a 10 to 13.5 kWh battery is a rational conversation. If exports are modest, start smaller or fix usage patterns before upsizing.

Switchboard work, monitoring and backup
Retrofit quotes often include switchboard upgrades, export limit compliance, consumption monitoring and optional backup gateways. Australian standards and distributor rules vary, so a battery that is fine in one suburb can need extra protection hardware in another.
Backup during outages is not automatic. Many retrofits optimise bills first, with backup as an add-on that covers essential circuits only. Whole-home backup costs more and depends on battery power limits (kW) as well as capacity (kWh).
If a salesperson promises seamless whole-home backup on a single 5 kW battery, ask which circuits are included and what happens when the oven and air conditioner start together.
Federal rebate and eligibility on retrofit
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies to eligible new battery installs whether or not you already have solar. Retrofit does not disqualify you by itself. The discount is still usually applied as a point-of-sale STC reduction by your accredited installer.
Common eligibility failures are the same as new installs: non-approved products, DIY wiring, second-hand packs, or installs outside the accredited pathway. Confirm the federal discount is shown as a line item on your quote, not just mentioned in marketing copy.

Can I add a battery without replacing my solar inverter?
Often yes with an AC-coupled battery, if your existing inverter is compatible and still within service life. Some sites still need inverter or switchboard upgrades.
